Score: 4. Beloved and thought by many to be the greatest of the American novels, Gone with the Wind is a story of love, hope and loss set against the tense historical background of the American Civil War.

The lovers at the novel's centre - the selfish, privileged Scarlett O'Hara and rakish Rhett Butler - are magnetic: pulling readers into the tangled narrative of a struggle to survive that cannot be forgotten. Seventy-five years on from the cinematic release of Gone with the Wind, Helen Taylor looks at the reasons why the book and film have had such an appeal, especially for women.

Drawing on letters and questionnaires from female fans, she brings together material from southern history, literature, film and feminist theory and discusses the themes of the Civil War and issues of race. Studio Warner Bros. Synopsis Gone with the Wind is a American epic historical romance film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind. It was produced by David O. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era, the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara, the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, from her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes, who is married to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton, to her marriage to Rhett Butler.

Production was difficult from the start. Filming was delayed for two years due to Selznick's determination to secure Gable for the role of Rhett Butler, and the "search for Scarlett" led to 1, women being interviewed for the part.

The original screenplay was written by Sidney Howard, but underwent many revisions by several writers in an attempt to get it down to a suitable length.

The original director, George Cukor, was fired shortly after filming had begun and was replaced by Fleming, who in turn was briefly replaced by Sam Wood while Fleming took some time off due to exhaustion. The film received positive reviews upon its release in December , although some reviewers found it dramatically lacking and bloated.

Girl you sound racist as hell. This movie is 1 of the greatest movies of all times. Everyone knows that it is so inaccurate in the portrayal of the history of the south. You can watch it, or not watch it. That is your personal choice. But, don't think for one freaking second that you can force others to join your little club.

Choices are like rectums. Everybody has one. But, some are more full of shit than others!
